My Air Conditioner Can't Keep Up

With  the amount of heat we've been having, many of you have been calling us and telling us your A/C just doesn't seem to be keeping you cool. You have the thermostat set at 73 and you can only cool the house down to about 76 degrees. What is the problem? There are a few things that would cause this problem. First of all, when it gets as hot as it has been, it's hard for any air conditioner to keep up with the heat. There may always be a degree or two difference  in the setting on your thermostat and the actual room temperature. That being said, there are still things you might try to make your home cooler. Here is a list:

  • CHANGE YOUR FILTERS, more often. Changing your filters often will increase the amount of cold air actually entering your home. You can be cooler and your heating and cooling equipment will run cooler, and more efficiently.
  • CLEAN AND FLUSH your A/C coils. The coils inside your air conditioner are pretty much fully exposed to the damaging elements outside. Grass clippings, spider webs, pet hair, dust, and debris get trapped inside your air conditioner and can impede its efficiency, therefore not able to cool your home properly. When the system is not running in the early morning, take a garden hose and flush out the coils. Each week after you mow your yard, use your leaf blower to blow out any dust that has accumulated.
  • CLOSE CURTAINS and blinds early in the day. If you have east or west facing windows that have a lot of sunlight coming in, you must close those early in the day before your home begins to heat up inside If you must enjoy your great view out the windows, then you must enjoy the heat coming thru those windows as well.
  • COOL DOWN EARLY in the day. Using a programable thermostat you can set your air conditioner to come on early, before it heats up. Don't wait until the house is hot before you turn the thermostat down. If you do, your air conditioner will never keep up with or reach your desired temperature
